In her original comic biography, Ellie Phimister was a Genoshan student in Emma Frost's telepathy class. She reported recurring nightmares of Genosha's extermination before Cassandra Nova's Wild Sentinels arrived, massacring 16 million residents and killing Ellie. Although she later appeared alive as an illusion within the Hellfire Club, these were projections of Emma Frost's mind. In the Necrosha storyline, Selene and Eli Bard temporarily resurrected her using the Transmode Virus; uniquely, Ellie did not fall under Selene's control. Later resurfacing in Marvel Now!, she lived a mundane life in Albuquerque before being captured by Umbral Dynamics and subsequently joining Domino's Mercs for Money with Hit-Monkey. Her powers evolved significantly, allowing her to manipulate reality at a quantum level, rearrange matter into shapes like flaming monkeys or butterflies, and gain abilities from potential future selves.

In another timeline, she hid with a mutant enclave in the Amazon but was attacked by Lash after Deadpool led him there; she then traveled back to stop herself from changing the timeline. Later, while working with Wade Wilson, Ellie received a vision of a pan-dimensional infraction that threatened all reality due to her dating life. The Time Variance Authority sought to erase her to prevent her becoming a Galactus-lite entity. However, Emma Frost, Jean Grey, Wanda Maximoff, Tabitha Smith, Susan Storm, and Deadpool intervened to delay the TVA, averting the destruction of existence by ensuring Ellie met her potential love interest, fellow mutant Yuki Ohara.
