Lore & Background

The X-Mansion is the inherited property of Charles Xavier and has been in the Xavier family for ten generations, including two known mutants in the lineage, both becoming detached from the family. Little else is known about them or their mutations. As Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, it trained the first two generations of teenage X-Men: the original team (Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Jean Grey, later joined by Havok, Polaris, Mimic, and Changeling) and the original New Mutants (Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Karma, Sunspot, Cypher, Magma, Magik, and Warlock, along with Shadowcat). In X-Men (vol. 2) #38 (November 1994), the mansion was renamed the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. The school for young mutants was relocated to the Massachusetts Academy in Western Massachusetts, which served as the training site of the third generation (Generation X: Skin, Synch, M, Husk, Jubilee, Chamber, Blink, Mondo, Gaia, and Penance). The Massachusetts Academy closed permanently in Generation X #75 (June 2001). The school reopened at the X-Mansion under the same name despite the younger student body. The fourth generation studied at the mansion until it was destroyed during the 2007–2008 story 'Messiah Complex,' after which the X-Men disbanded and closed the institute. The mansion has been destroyed and rebuilt several times: demolished in a battle with the Sidri in The Uncanny X-Men #154 (February 1982), atomized by Mister Sinister in The Uncanny X-Men #243 (April 1989), rebuilt by a future Franklin Richards but reverted to its destroyed state, heavily damaged during Onslaught (X-Men #54, June 1996), stripped by Bastion in 'Operation: Zero Tolerance,' destroyed in the 'Planet X' storyline (New X-Men #146–150), and destroyed by Sentinels in 'Messiah Complex.' After the Terrigen Mist Cloud became toxic to mutants, Storm had the mansion (renamed X-Haven) moved to Limbo. After Medusa destroyed the Terrigen Cloud, Kitty Pryde moved the mansion from Limbo to Central Park, New York, and renamed it the Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach. Following the end of the Krakoan Age, the X-Mansion has been converted into a prison to house Inmate-X.

In Their Own Story

The rain hammered against the stained-glass windows of the main hall, echoing the somber mood inside. The mansion was quiet for once, the usual chatter of students replaced by the heavy silence of a recent battle. A figure in red and black leaned against a marble pillar, humming a tune that clashed with the atmosphere. 'So,' Deadpool whispered to his own reflection in a darkened trophy case, 'the big guy is gone again. Just another Tuesday at the X-Men's fancy dorm.' He adjusted his mask, looking toward the empty doorway where Professor Xavier's wheelchair usually sat, wondering if the dream of peace was worth the constant price of blood.

Reader's Guide

The X-Mansion is located at 1407 Graymalkin Lane, Salem Center, Westchester County, New York. In the middle of the main courtyard is the Phoenix Memorial Statue, dedicated to the memory of Jean Grey. Notable rooms include the Danger Room and a room containing Cerebro. The Headmasters Office of Cyclops and Emma Frost is on the top floor. The basketball court is a popular hang-out, site of a game in X-Men (vol. 2) #4 (January 1992). Directly below the basketball court is the hangar, housing vehicles and aircraft such as the X-Men Blackbird. There is also a cemetery with memorials for deceased X-Men like Thunderbird. The mansion has been renamed multiple times: Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, Jean Grey School for Higher Learning (reopened by Wolverine in a 2011 edition), X-Haven (moved to Limbo), Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach (moved to Central Park), and Graymalkin Prison (converted after the Krakoan Age). Faculty pre-Messiah Complex included Shadowcat (computer science), Karma (French), Nightcrawler (music, art, life sciences, drama), Beast (science and mathematics), Emma Frost (English, business, ethics, headmistress), Wolverine (close quarters combat), Cyclops (leadership and tactics, headmaster), Northstar (business and consumer law, flying class), Iceman (mathematics, finance, accounting), Gambit (target practice), and Wolfsbane (teaching assistant in Beast's science class). Post-X-Men: Schism, the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning was built on grounds that are a spawn of the living island Krakoa, funded by scientific advancements and diamonds from Krakoa. Staff included Storm (headmistress), Beast (vice-principal), Rogue, Iceman, Rachel Summers, Northstar, Firestar (senior staff), and others.
